A French Import With Class

The four-day race week at Santa Anita begins today with a juicy $185,319 pick-six carry-over.

Some tickets may start the sequence with a single. Mirabilis, a 4-year-old Lear Fan filly who is making her U.S. debut for Juddmonte Farms and trainer Bobby Frankel in the third race, may have too much class for her opposition.

Mirabilis won two of six starts for trainer Andre Fabre last year in France and capped her year on Oct. 1 with a third-place finish, beaten by only a neck, in the Prix de la Foret, a Group I at seven furlongs.

Frankel usually has his imports ready to fire in their first start in this country and she gets a top rider in Alex Solis in the $60,000 optional claimer at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

The other grass race in the pick six is at the same distance, but looks wide open. Contenders in the $62,500 claimer for 4-year-olds include Tommy’s Topper, a recent easy winner on the main track at Hollywood Park, the comebacking Miracle Maker, Wind Water and Midnite Moonshine.

Race of the day: Healthy Addiction, who has three wins and four seconds in seven starts on the Santa Anita main track, makes her first start in Arcadia since winning the Lady’s Secret Breeders’ Cup Handicap on Oct. 2 in the $75,000 Paseana. Garrett Gomez will ride the 5-year-old Boston Harbor mare for owner Pamela Ziebarth and trainer John Sadler in the 1 1/16 -mile race, which is the second on the card. Healthy Addiction, who finished last in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in her most recent race Oct. 29, will face Rena De Sonora, Musica Si, Emerald Sunrise and Freakin Streakin in the Paseana.

One for the road: Rogue Agent makes his first start for trainer Peter Walder and can improve with the blinkers coming off in the ninth race today at Gulfstream Park. John Velazquez will ride the 7-year-old Anjiz gelding in the $37,000 optional claimer at one mile.

Exotically speaking: A place pick all using Eleganza in the first, Healthy Addiction in the second, Mirabilis in the third, Best Friend Gracie and Chanel Islands in the fourth, Our Southern Pearl and Alltroienne in the fifth, Tommy’s Topper and Miracle Maker in the sixth, Only In Reno and King Of L.A. in the seventh and Sunette in the eighth.
