Augustus Responds Well for LSU Women

Seimone Augustus scored 24 points, including the winning shot with 13 seconds left, and No. 3-ranked Louisiana State overcame Tasha Humphrey’s 31 points to beat No. 13 Georgia, 65-64, Sunday at Athens, Ga.

After Humphrey had given the Bulldogs a 64-63 edge, Augustus got free along the right wing and made a 10-footer for Tigers (16-1, 5-0 Southeastern Conference). Georgia (13-5, 3-2) had a couple of chances to win after that but never got the ball to Humphrey, who made 12 of 20 shots, including four of five three-pointers, and had 11 rebounds.

No. 4 North Carolina 68, Florida State 51 -- Erlana Larkins scored 22 points at Chapel Hill, N.C., and the Tar Heels (18-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast) got off to their best start since winning their first 18 games in 1994-95. The Seminoles (11-7, 2-3) missed 12 of their final 14 shots.

No. 7 Ohio State 67, No. 12 Michigan State 65 -- Jessica Davenport scored 31 points, including a layup in the final second, to lift the Buckeyes (15-2, 6-1 Big Ten) at East Lansing, Mich. Davenport, who had 10 rebounds, took a 40-foot pass and scored at the buzzer. It ended a 23-game win streak for the Spartans (14-6, 4-3) at Breslin Center.

No. 11 Purdue 57, Illinois 53 -- The Boilermakers (15-2, 7-0 Big Ten) had their 10-point lead cut to one with 2:15 left but hung on to beat the Illini (12-6, 4-3) at Champaign, Ill.

No. 16 Minnesota 80, Iowa 68 -- At Iowa City, the Gophers (13-4, 6-1 Big Ten) trailed the Hawkeyes (12-7, 5-3) at halftime, 37-32, for the first time this season but won by a double-digit margin for the third consecutive game.

Florida 73, No. 19 Vanderbilt 59 -- Marshae Dotson scored 17 points to give the Gators (15-3, 4-2 SEC) the win at Gainesville, Fla., on Coach Carolyn Peck’s 40th birthday. The Gators trailed the Commodores (13-6, 2-3), 34-26, at halftime, and rallied from a first-half deficit for the fifth time in seven games.

No. 21 Temple 67, Xavier 62 -- Candice Dupree had 22 points, eight rebounds and five blocks to help the Owls (14-4, 5-1 Atlantic 10) overcome Tara Boothe’s 30-point performance for the Musketeers (12-6, 3-4) at Cincinnati.

Massachusetts 55, No. 25 George Washington 53 -- Kate Mills had 13 points, 11 rebounds and two free throws with 10 seconds left to lift the Minutewomen (5-13, 2-5 Atlantic 10) to the upset over the Colonials (12-5, 5-1) at Amherst, Mass. Massachusetts overcame a six-point deficit in the final four minutes for its first victory over a ranked team since it beat No. 22 Stanford on Dec. 12, 1999.

MEN

No. 24 North Carolina 81, Florida State 80 -- Reyshawn Terry made two free throws with 23 seconds left to lift the Tar Heels (11-4, 3-2 ACC) at Tallahassee, Fla. Wes Miller led North Carolina with a career-high 18 points.

Miller got all of his points from outside, making six of 10 from three-point range. Alexander Johnson connected on two free throws with 39 seconds left to give the Seminoles an 80-79 lead, setting the stage for Terry. Al Thornton’s desperation jump shot from the top of the circle in the final seconds was well off the mark for Florida State (11-4, 2-3).
