Reds Win in 9th on Dunn’s Slam

Rounding the bases while his teammates poured from the dugout, Adam Dunn was thinking that this shouldn’t be happening.

Dunn’s grand slam with two out in the bottom of the ninth against Bob Wickman on Friday night vaulted the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-8 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

The Reds trailed, 7-0, entering the bottom of the eighth.

“We had no business winning that game,” Dunn said.

The victory enabled the Reds to move into a virtual tie for first place with the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central.

The Cleveland bullpen fell to 6-14, the worst in the American League.

Chicago White Sox 6, Chicago Cubs 2 -- Juan Uribe had a home run and five runs batted in to lead the White Sox to a victory at Wrigley Field.

White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski and Cubs catcher Michael Barrett, who were at the center of a brawl in the teams’ series in May, made their peace before the game with an outfield chat and a handshake.

Barrett returned Friday after serving his 10-game suspension and went over to Pierzynski during batting practice.

“What was said was between him and me,” Pierzynski said. “I appreciated the gesture, and we’re over it and we’re moving on.”

Florida 5, Boston 2 -- Dontrelle Willis yielded two runs in seven innings and Miguel Cabrera drove in two runs to help the host Marlins end Boston’s win streak at 12 games.

Boston played error-free defense for the 17th consecutive game, setting a major league record, one better than the St. Louis Cardinals’ 16-game run in 1992.

New York Yankees 2, New York Mets 0 -- Five pitchers combined on a one-hitter at Yankee Stadium, and Jason Giambi homered to send the Mets to their fourth consecutive loss.

The Mets optioned outfielder Lastings Milledge to triple-A Norfolk to make room for Cliff Floyd’s return.

Detroit 7, Pittsburgh 6 -- Carlos Guillen’s two-run triple highlighted the Tigers’ four-run third inning, and the Pirates lost for the 14th time in 15 games.

The Tigers are 30 games above .500 at 55-25, the same record built by Detroit’s 1984 World Series championship team, which started 35-5.

The game marked the return to Pittsburgh of Tigers Manager Jim Leyland, who managed the Pirates from 1986 to ’96.

Arizona 6, Oakland 4 -- Eric Byrnes scored the go-ahead run against his former club on a wild pitch in the seventh inning at Oakland.

Kansas City 7, St. Louis 5 -- Pinch-hitter Matt Stairs’ sacrifice fly in the 10th inning drove in the go-ahead run as the Royals won at St. Louis, handing the Cardinals their ninth loss in 10 games.

Minnesota 8, Milwaukee 2 -- Justin Morneau and Torii Hunter hit consecutive home runs in the second inning, Brad Radke pitched seven innings and the Twins won at home for their eighth straight victory.

Texas 3, Houston 1 -- Mark Teixeira scored the go-ahead run after ending an 0-for-17 drought with a double in the seventh inning, and the Rangers won at home to end a five-game losing streak.

Tampa Bay 11, Washington 1 -- Carl Crawford hit a pair of two-run homers as the Devil Rays won at Washington.

Toronto 8, Philadelphia 1 -- Lyle Overbay homered twice as the Blue Jays won at Toronto, extending their win streak to four.

Atlanta 5, Baltimore 3 -- Marcus Giles broke a sixth-inning tie with a two-run single and Chuck James won his second straight start as the Braves won at home. Atlanta finished with a 6-21 record in June.

Colorado 2, Seattle 0 -- Josh Fogg pitched a two-hitter for his first major league shutout and Brad Hawpe homered in the Rockies’ victory at Seattle.

San Diego 6, San Francisco 5 -- Khalil Greene hit a two-run single with one out in the ninth inning at San Diego.
