A 19-year-old driver who police said was intoxicated struck a car carrying a mother and three young children Sunday, with one of the cars then careening onto the sidewalk and crashing into two juvenile pedestrians.

The accident left the family members and one of the pedestrians, a 5-year-old girl, hospitalized in stable condition, and the other, a 17-year-old girl, hospitalized in critical condition.

The incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. when the teenage driver, who was traveling on 102nd Street, hit a car at Central Avenue, said Officer Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department. The man walked away but returned a few minutes later and surrendered to police.
