Khalil Greene’s three-run homer off All-Star closer Tom Gordon in the ninth inning lifted the San Diego Padres to a 6-3 victory over the Phillies on Wednesday night at Philadelphia.

Jake Peavy pitched seven strong innings and hit his first career homer for the Padres, who ended an 11-game losing streak to Philadelphia that dated to the 2004 season.

Greene is hitting only .231, but he has 11 homers, 45 RBIs and is building a reputation for delivering hits at the right time. The third-year shortstop had a game-winning, two-run single in the ninth inning against San Francisco last Friday. Earlier this season, he hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning of a 3-0 victory over the Dodgers.

“I try not to overanalyze the situation and put a good swing on the ball,” Greene said.

Colorado 5, San Francisco 3 -- Josh Fogg pitched seven strong innings at Denver and had his first hit and RBI of the season.

Barry Bonds was one for four and remains at 719 home runs. He hasn’t hit a homer since June 24 against Oakland.

Chicago 1, Houston 0 -- Sean Marshall gave up six hits in seven strong innings to help the Cubs avert a three-game sweep at Houston. Todd Walker had an RBI double in the fifth, the only run off Roy Oswalt, who lost his second straight complete game.

Florida 18, Washington 9 -- The Marlins tied a franchise record with an eight-run inning in the highest scoring game ever played at Washington’s RFK Stadium.

The announced attendance of 18,441 -- the actual number in the seats was much less -- was the lowest at RFK Stadium since baseball returned to Washington last year.

The most runs previously scored at RFK was 22, although baseball’s long absence from Washington means the stadium has had baseball for only 12 seasons since it opened in 1961.

Atlanta 14, St. Louis 4 -- Chuck James became the first Braves rookie in 23 years to win his first three starts, giving up four runs and eight hits in six innings at Atlanta. Rick Behenna had a 3-0 start for the Braves in 1983.

New York 5, Pittsburgh 0 -- Orlando Hernandez stopped the Pirates on four hits through seven innings at New York. The Mets became the first National League team to win 50 games.

Milwaukee 6, Cincinnati 5 -- Rickie Weeks doubled with the bases loaded in the 13th, giving the Brewers the win at Milwaukee. Geremi Gonzalez earned the victory for the Brewers, who completed a three-game sweep of the Reds.
