U.S. Strike in Oruzgan Kills Taliban Suspects

A U.S. warplane bombed a militant hide-out in southern Afghanistan, killing more than 40 suspected Taliban fighters, officials said. One Afghan soldier was killed and three soldiers in the U.S.-led coalition were wounded during the battle in Oruzgan province.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld arrived today in Kabul to speak to President Hamid Karzai about growing violence.

British Defense Secretary Des Browne said 900 more British soldiers would be sent by October to help deal with stronger than expected resistance in the southern province of Helmand, a hub of the Afghan opium trade.
