Guillen’s Home Run Lifts the Tigers, 10-9

Carlos Guillen hit a game-winning homer against Jeremy Affeldt with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 10-9 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

The Tigers overcame a 4-0 deficit against Kansas City for the second straight game and earned their 10th consecutive win over the Royals this season.

Guillen drove a 1-and-2 pitch from Affeldt (4-6) down the line and over the left-field fence for his 11th homer.

Todd Jones (2-5) earned the victory by pitching a scoreless ninth. Craig Monroe was three for four with two runs batted in and Marcus Thames had a two-run triple for Detroit.

Mark Teahen had a three-run homer and a double, Angel Berroa homered and drove in two runs, and David DeJesus had a three-run double for Kansas City.

Detroit’s Kenny Rogers, who got the start for the American League in this week’s All-Star game, lasted only four innings in his first outing after the break. He gave up five runs and six hits, walked one and struck out three in his shortest stint of the season.
