Bryzgalov: Ducks Seek to Deal Giguere

Ilya Bryzgalov says the Anaheim Ducks want him to be their first-choice netminder rather than veteran Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

“I got a call from the club, and they told me that they see me as their No. 1 goaltender,” the Russian told Sovietsky Sport newspaper. “They also want to trade Giguere, but no one wants him.”

Asked about his relationship with the Canadian, Bryzgalov said: “I don’t want to say anything about him, because we play on the same team and I can’t say anything bad about him.”

General Manager Brian Burke said his goaltender’s comments may have been misinterpreted.

“My first reaction is that this could be a language-barrier issue,” Burke said. “No one from our organization has told either goalie that they will be our No. 1 goalie, nor has anyone told them they will be traded.”

Burke said he has not actively shopped Bryzgalov or Giguere, though it is believed he has received offers for both. Giguere, 29, figured to be made expendable because of Bryzgalov’s performance in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but it appears his $4-million salary for 2006-07 is scaring off suitors. A restricted free agent, Bryzgalov remains unsigned. The 26-year-old has received a qualifying offer of $501,600.

“What I did tell each player was that since they both established themselves as No. 1 goalies in the league, we would listen to offers on either of them,” Burke said. “But I haven’t offered either to any team, period.”
