Two girls were wounded in a shooting in Compton late Friday, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.

Authorities confirmed that the two children were hit by gunfire about 10 p.m. in the 2000 block of North Santa Fe Avenue, near East Pine Street, on the city’s north side.

“All we know is that there were numerous shots fired and we later learned there were two children hit,” said Sheriff’s Sgt. April Tardy.

Compton Fire Chief Rico Smith said deputies told him the injuries to the children, ages 3 and 9, did not appear to be life-threatening. The girls were playing outside when they were hit.

The children were taken to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. Authorities had no suspects and couldn’t say if the shooting was gang-related.

Compton, with a population of about 96,000, has long been plagued by gangs and violence, but last year the city recorded 72 homicides, the highest toll in a decade.
