Aragorn Goes for First Win Streak in the Read

Share

Aragorn will try to do something today he has yet to accomplish in his career when he runs in the $400,000 Eddie Read Handicap at Del Mar.

Specifically, win two in a row. The 4-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway has not won back-to-back in a career that has seen him win three of 10 while competing in England, Ireland and the U.S.

Owned and bred by Ballygallon Stud Ltd., Aragorn won for the second time in this country, scoring a 6-1 upset under jockey Corey Nakatani in the Shoemaker Breeders’ Cup Mile when last seen on May 29 at Hollywood Park. Nakatani has the call again today in the Grade I Read.

Trained by Neil Drysdale, Aragorn will be asked to negotiate an extra eighth of a mile today and he is one for one at 1 1/8 miles. He took the Oak Tree Derby by a nose over Eastern Sand on Oct. 15 at Santa Anita.

Drysdale also entered Fourty Niners Son, who was second behind Sweet Return in the 2005 Read. Sweet Return is also back for another shot. He is winless in five races since for Red Oak Stable and trainer Ron McAnally.

The other stakes race on the card is the $100,000 Fleet Treat for 3-year-old fillies bred in California. The field is headed by Getback Time, who has won four in a row after finishing fifth in her career debut. Tyler Baze will ride for trainer Rafael Becerra.

Race of the day: A.V. Flynn, who was scratched from the CTBA Stakes two days ago at Del Mar, will try to remain unbeaten in the $50,000 Solano County Juvenile Filly today at Solano. Macario Rodriguez will ride the 2-year-old Roar filly, who beat maidens by 13 lengths in track-record time in her debut June 28 at Pleasanton, for trainer Steve Miyadi in the 5 1/2 -furlong race that drew seven other entrants.

One for the road: B Like A Lion stretches out and tries the turf in the fifth at Arlington Park after finishing a sharp second at 25-1 in his sprint debut May 19. Eddie Martin Jr. will ride the 3-year-old Lion Cavern gelding for owner-breeders Kathy Mitchell and Barbara Davis and trainer Paraskevas Mitchell in the $30,000 contest for Illinois breds at one mile.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Point Ashley in the seventh, Aragorn, Silent Name and Fourty Niners Son in the eighth and Seven Nation Army, Shootist and Swiss Arrow in the ninth.
