Update -- Despite its futile efforts of late, the Galaxy again stole attention from its local rival when it fired Steve Sampson as coach on Tuesday and hired Frank Yallop on Wednesday to replace him. Before those moves, all most observers could focus on was the Galaxy’s franchise-record six-game losing streak and a 525-minute scoreless streak. That scoring drought ended Saturday when John Wolyniec scored against the Houston Dynamo, but the losing streak continued in a 2-1 loss. Meanwhile, Chivas’ two-game winning streak is a franchise first and the team hopes to reach another milestone tonight with a first-ever victory over the Galaxy.

In the teams’ previous meeting April 15, the Galaxy rallied with two goals by Cornell Glen in the last six minutes for a 2-1 victory. Glen is with Trinidad and Tobago at the World Cup and is unavailable, as are Galaxy teammates Landon Donovan and Chris Albright, who are with the U.S. team. Galaxy defender Kyle Veris (knee) is out and midfielders Cobi Jones (foot), Guillermo Gonzalez (hamstring) and Peter Vagenas (quadriceps) are listed as questionable. Chivas will be without two players who are on World Cup duty: defender Claudio Suarez (Mexico) and midfielder John O’Brien (U.S.). Also out for Chivas are midfielders Ramon Ramirez (knee) and Mike Munoz (concussion).

The Galaxy is 5-0-0 all-time against Chivas. “Chivas is salivating,” Vagenas said. “They’ve been salivating for two years now. There is no reason we cannot go out there and continue what’s been a tremendous domination against Chivas USA.”
