Wings or wheels for the chief?

Re “Chief Says LAPD Flights Save Time, Money,” June 7

I understand The Times’ concerns that L.A. Police Chief William J. Bratton has, for official business only, used city aircraft to avoid traffic and airport delays. The point seems to be that the chief should wait in traffic or airports like the rest of us.

I don’t want the chief sitting in traffic. I want him leading the Police Department. My reaction to the article was to be concerned that the chief doesn’t use the aircraft enough. I want him on the spot, not on the 110.

If city leaders spent more time traveling the way the rest of us do, maybe they could find a solution to our traffic congestion. Instead, they bypass all of this with their little perks by saying “It saves the taxpayers.” Maybe they should use their own cars; that would also “save the taxpayers,” and maybe the potholes and bad streets would get some repairs.
