The U.S. Senate Banking Committee approved the nomination of Federal Reserve Board Gov. Donald Kohn to be vice chairman at the central bank, sending it to the full Senate for a final vote.

Kohn, who has served on the central bank’s board since August 2002, is a 36-year veteran of the Fed system.

If his nomination is approved by the full Senate he will be cleared to serve a renewable four-year term in the Fed’s No. 2 slot, succeeding Roger Ferguson.
