Bill Moffitt, 88; Father of Athletes Billie Jean King, Randy Moffitt
Bill Moffitt, 88, the father of tennis star Billie Jean King and former major league pitcher Randy Moffitt, died Friday at his home in Prescott, Ariz., after a brief illness, World TeamTennis spokeswoman Rosie Crews said Saturday.
Born April 8, 1918, in Montana, Moffitt lived much of his adult life in Long Beach before retiring to Prescott.
A former Long Beach City College basketball player, Moffitt served in the Navy in World War II.
He spent 35 years with the Long Beach Fire Department. He also was a scout for the Milwaukee Brewers.
In addition to his daughter and son, Moffitt is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty.
