The Defense Department last week also identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

Zachary M. Alday, 22, of Donalsonville, Ga.; seaman apprentice, Navy. Alday died June 9 from injuries sustained earlier in the day when the vehicle in which he was riding struck a land mine. His unit was conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. Alday was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 7th Regimental Combat Team, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) at Camp Pendleton.

Bernard P. Corpuz, 28, of Watsonville, Calif.; corporal, Army. Corpuz died June 11 in Ghanzi, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained when his convoy came under enemy small arms fire and an improvised explosive device detonated during combat operations. He was assigned to the 303rd Military Intelligence Battalion, 504th Military Intelligence Brigade at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Patrick D. Damon, 41, of Falmouth, Maine; captain, Army National Guard. Damon died Thursday in Bagram, Afghanistan, from a noncombat-related cause. He was assigned to the 240th Engineer Group in Augusta, Maine.

Russell M. Durgin, 23, of Henniker, N.H.; sergeant, Army. Durgin died Tuesday in Korengel, Afghanistan, when his unit took small arms fire. He was assigned to the 32nd Infantry Battalion, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Michael A. Estrella, 20, of Hemet; corporal, Marine Corps. Estrella died Wednesday while conducting combat operations in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Clarence D. McSwain, 31, of Meridian, Miss.; sergeant first class, Army. McSwain died June 8 in Baghdad of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his convoy vehicle during combat operations. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Charles E. Munier, 50, of Wheatland, Wyo.; lieutenant colonel, Army National Guard. Munier died Monday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington from a noncombat-related occurrence June 5 in Kabul, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the Wyoming Army National Guard’s training site in Guernsey, Wyo.

Roger P. Pena Jr., 29, of San Antonio; sergeant, Army. Pena died Wednesday in Musa Qulah, Afghanistan, when his convoy came under enemy small arms fire during combat operations. He was assigned to the 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Jeremiah S. Santos, 21, of Minot, N.D.; specialist, Army. Santos died Thursday in Baghdad of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Benjamin J. Slaven, 22, of Plymouth, Neb.; private, Army Reserve. Slaven died June 9 in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq, of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations. He was assigned to the 308th Transportation Company in Lincoln, Neb.

John S. Vaughan, 23, of Edwards, Colo.; second lieutenant, Army. Vaughan died June 7 in Mosul, Iraq, when he encountered enemy small arms fire during dismounted combat operations. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.

Brent B. Zoucha, 19, of Merrick, Neb.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Zoucha died June 9 of wounds received while conducting combat operations in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
