Jockeys were unseated in three consecutive races Sunday at Hollywood Park, overshadowing a triumph by Genre in the $159,200 Cinema Breeders’ Cup Handicap for 3-year-olds, a Grade III stakes race on the turf.

The “wild day,” as jockey Martin Pedroza described it after his winning ride on Genre, started in the fifth race with David Flores being thrown after his horse, Bruisen Susan, clipped heels at the top of the stretch of the 5 1/2 -furlong race on the turf.

Flores complained of lower back pain and was taken to Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center, where X-rays were negative.

In the sixth race, 5-year-old Valetto broke down soon after crossing the finish line of the seven-furlong race for maidens, unseating jockey Kerwin John. Valetto was put down. John left the track uninjured.

Then, in the seventh race, the 1 1/8 -mile Cinema, jockey Jose Valdiva Jr. had New Joysey Jeff in third place in the stretch and closing when the horse ducked out, sending Valdiva flying to the ground. He broke his collarbone.

“It’s one of those days,” jockey Juan Ochoa said. “Nothing like this has happened in a long time.”

Genre, at 5-1 odds, rallied to overtake Niagara Causeway by half a length and give the victory to trainer Ben Cecil and owner David Mueller.

Genre, who was bred in England, covered the distance in 1:47.73.

“Today, we might have still been second-best,” Pedroza said. “When Jose fell down, it looked like his horse was going to win.”
