Southland Women Ousted in NAIA

The dream of an All-Golden State Athletic Conference final in the NAIA women’s basketball championship came to an abrupt end Monday when Vanguard and The Master’s College each lost semifinal games at Jackson, Tenn.

Carolyn Manning scored 14 points to lead three players in double figures as Lubbock Christian rolled to a 69-59 upset of Vanguard. Later, Union started the game with a 20-2 run and knocked out The Master’s, 62-51.

Vanguard (31-2), which was led by Kelly Schmidt’s 28 points, could not overcome 28.8% shooting from the field. Guard Jessica Richter, who averaged 21 points during the regular season, was limited to five on two-for-15 shooting, including 0 for 6 from three-point range.

Lubbock Christian (23-11) started the game with a 16-4 lead and Vanguard never got within six points.

Kinsley Mittle led The Master’s with 18 points, but the Mustangs also were victims of poor shooting, making only 31.8% of their attempts.

The Master’s had handed Vanguard its only other loss this season on March 3 in the GSAC tournament.

Dion Harris made a three-pointer as time expired in the second overtime to lift Michigan to an 87-84 win over Notre Dame at Ann Arbor, Mich., and secure a trip to the NIT men’s quarterfinals. The Wolverines (20-10), who got 29 points from Daniel Horton, will play host to Miami on Wednesday.

Chris Quinn had 18 points to lead Notre Dame (16-14).

In other second-round games: Guillermo Diaz made a free throw with 2.6 seconds left and Miami (18-15) held on for a 53-52 win over Creighton (20-10) at Omaha. ... Antoine Agudio scored 24 points and Loren Stokes had 22 to send Hofstra (26-6) to a 77-75 overtime win over St. Joseph’s (19-14) at Philadelphia.... Brian Johnson scored a career-high 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Louisville (20-12) to a 74-68 win over Clemson (19-13) at Louisville, Ky.... Nathan Bilyeu converted a three-point play with 2.3 seconds left to lead Missouri State (22-8) to a 60-59 win over Houston (21-10) at Springfield, Mo.... Alex Loughton had 20 points and nine rebounds and Brandon Johnson made two free throws with 11.9 seconds as Old Dominion (23-9) held on for a 70-66 victory over Manhattan (20-11) at Norfolk, Va.

Lamar men’s basketball Coach Billy Tubbs is leaving after three seasons but will stay as the athletic director at his alma mater.

Tubbs returned to the school in May 2002 and compiled a 46-43 record over three seasons. The team went 17-14 this season.
