A man wielding a shotgun on a busy downtown street Saturday night killed one person and wounded four others before he was shot by a Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy, officials said.

Aaron Norman Dunn, 28, remained under arrest Sunday at UC Davis Medical Center, where he was being treated for injuries received during a rampage that started outside a restaurant, Sgt. R. L. Davis said.

Armed with a 12-gauge shotgun, Dunn shot a man in the head at 7:45 p.m. as the man sat in his car with his wife and two children in front of a Chili’s Grill & Bar, Davis said.

After getting into a white Toyota Camry and then driving around until he crashed, the gunman fired several rounds at nearby cars before he shot another man in the head in the parking lot in front of a Mandango’s Sports Bar & Grill, Davis said.

The gunman continued firing as he walked down a busy downtown street, shooting a man in the back and then shattering the back window of a parked police car, Davis said.

As two sheriff’s deputies ordered the suspect to drop his weapon, one of them shielded an injured victim with her body to protect the victim from being shot again, Davis said.

One of the deputies shot Dunn when he did not give up his weapon.

Davis did not identify the victims, but the Sacramento County coroner’s office said the dead man was John Johnson, 46, of Elk Grove. He died of a gunshot wound to the face, said Ed Smith, assistant coroner for Sacramento County.

In total, two others were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, including the second man shot in the head, whose injuries were life-threatening; and two suffered injuries from glass debris when shots hit their car windshields, Davis said.

Davis declined to identify the deputies, except to say both were female, one with four years in the department, the other with six. Both were placed on paid administrative leave, as part of routine procedure, pending an internal investigation, Davis said.
