March 30, 1966: “PEACE AT LAST! K&D; RETURN TO FOLD,” The Times proclaimed after star Dodger pitchers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale finally signed contracts for the season. Koufax and Drysdale had formed a two-man union before spring training began, demanding three-year contracts that would pay them $166,666 a year. They ended up signing for much less, The Times reported: Koufax for about $120,000 and Drysdale for about $105,000. Dodger General Manager Buzzie Bavasi wasn’t coy about his relief. “It would have been a miserable season without them,” he said. The Dodgers took the pennant, but lost the World Series against the Orioles. In November, after winning his third Cy Young Award as the major leagues’ top pitcher, Koufax retired. He was 30.
