Fink Falls to Cal’s Fodor

Each time USC freshman Amanda Fink tried to win with topspin, Suzi Fodor sliced through it with another volley.

Fodor, a junior at California by way of Budapest, Hungary, used athleticism and artistry in attacks at the net to undercut Fink, 7-6 (2), 6-3, and win the Pacific 10 Conference women’s singles championship at the 106th Ojai Valley tennis tournament Sunday at Libbey Park.

“It was an interesting match,” Fodor said. “We made each other play, and it was fun and different.”

Contrasting styles were evident throughout, with the left-handed Fink going for heavy-topspin passing shots from both wings, and Fodor chipping and charging at every opportunity.

“I’m never satisfied with the way I play, but there was some really good tennis played today,” said Fink, a Calabasas High graduate who’s No. 10 nationally.

Freshman Matt Bruch won an all-Stanford Pac-10 men’s singles final, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-0, over junior James Wan.

Third-seeded Zbynek Mlynarik, a 29-year-old ATP tour veteran, beat top-seeded Thousand Oaks High senior Sam Querrey, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, in the men’s open championship match to claim a $4,000 share of the $15,000 purse for the division with prize money.

Querrey and Grant Doyle then fell to Nick Rainey and Brian Wilson, 6-2, 6-2, in the men’s open doubles final.

Kasenia Milevskaya defeated Maureen Diaz, 6-3, 6-0, in the women’s open championship match.
