N.Y. City Opera won’t relocate

The New York City Opera said it won’t proceed with a plan to build a costly opera house west of its current home at Lincoln Center.

The 63-year-old opera company said in a joint statement with developer A&R; Kalimian Realty: “Despite the best efforts of all parties, an agreement could not be reached on a number of legal, financial and design issues.”

City Opera for years has sought an acoustically friendly alternative to its current home at the New York State Theater, which it shares with the New York City Ballet. The opera had been discussing relocating to the base of a planned residential tower to be built at the site of the New York headquarters of the American Red Cross.
