From Times Staff and Wire Reports

About three weeks after the first bald eagle chick in more than half a century hatched on Santa Cruz Island, a second chick has appeared there in a separate nest.

Before this spring, the last known successful nesting of a bald eagle on any of the northern Channel Islands occurred in 1949 on Anacapa Island.

In about eight weeks, scientists will tag the new chick with a wing marker and a metal leg band and fit it with an electronic transmitter for future identification.
