Dance season stretches at Music Center

For its fourth season, the Dance at the Music Center series is expanding its reach to four of the five venues at the Music Center of Los Angeles County, booking companies at all the theaters except the Mark Taper Forum.

Thus, for the first time, Walt Disney Concert Hall -- built for the Los Angeles Philharmonic -- will host a dance event when Shen Wei Dance Arts performs there June 22 to 24, 2007. The New York-based company will present “Connect Transfer,” in which the dancers create a painting on the floor to a compiled score by Volans, Xenakis and Ligeti.

The 2006-07 season, announced Thursday, will open Oct. 6 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal. The company, which last appeared locally in 2000, will dance the West Coast premieres of Didy Veldman’s “TooT,” to Shostakovich’s Jazz Suite No. 2, and Stijn Celis’ “Noces” to the Stravinsky score. There will be three performances, Oct. 6 and 7.

As previously announced, Matthew Bourne’s “Edward Scissorhands” will be presented at the Ahmanson Theatre, Dec. 12 to 31, in partnership with the Center Theatre Group. The piece is based on the 1990 movie directed by Tim Burton. The music, composed, arranged and adapted by Terry Davis, is based on the original film score by Danny Elfman.

The season will continue Feb. 7 to 10 with Ronald K. Brown/Evidence at REDCAT. The Brooklyn-based company will premiere the first section of a work in progress, “One Shot: First Glance,” co-commissioned by the August Wilson Center for African American Culture and the American Dance Festival. Also on the bill, to be presented in partnership with REDCAT, will be Brown’s “Order My Steps” and “Grace.”

On March 22 to 24, the series will return to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion when the Joffrey Ballet will offer two mixed bills. Massine’s “Les Presages,” Jooss’ “The Green Table” and Balanchine’s “Apollo” will be danced March 22. The West Coast premiere of Donald Byrd’s “Motown Suite,” Laura Dean’s “Sometimes It Snows in April” and a revival of Twyla Tharp’s “Deuce Coupe,” set to Beach Boys songs, will be danced March 23 and 24.

Back at the Ahmanson, Nacho Duato’s Compania Nacional de Danza 2 will dance May 18 to 20. The Madrid-based company will present three works, including a premiere to be announced by Duato.

American Ballet Theatre will close the season, July 12 to 15, with two programs at the Pavilion. A mixed repertory program including Balanchine’s “Symphonie Concertante” and DeMille’s “Rodeo” will be danced July 12. Lar Lubovitch’s full-length “Othello” will be danced July 13 to 15.
