O’Neal fouls out, but Heat wins in the end

Dwyane Wade scored 34 points, Udonis Haslem had a personal-best 28 and Miami pulled away from New Jersey in the fourth quarter to win, 113-106, at East Rutherford, N.J.

Shaquille O’Neal, who sat out the last two games because of a bruised left knee, fouled out with 2:35 left with 13 points and six rebounds.

The Heat pulled away in the final minutes, just as it did in last season’s Eastern Conference semifinals.

Vince Carter led New Jersey with 33 points, and Richard Jefferson scored 16 despite missing most of the second half after appearing to reinjure his ankle. Jason Kidd barely missed a triple-double with 12 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.

Portland 92, New Orleans 91 -- Zach Randolph had 31 points, 12 rebounds and made the winning free throw with 2.4 seconds left for the Trail Blazers, who rallied from a 27-point deficit at home.

The Hornets’ Peja Stojakovic tied the score at 91-91, making a three-point basket with 5.2 seconds left, but Randolph drew a foul and went one for two at the free-throw line.

New Orleans scored 38 points in the first quarter, and had a 40-13 lead early in the second. But the Hornets had 33 points combined in the second and third.

Utah 107, Boston 100 -- Deron Williams had 26 points and 14 assists, Carlos Boozer had 24 points and 14 rebounds, and the visiting Jazz beat the Celtics for the first time in nearly three years.

Mehmet Okur scored 23 points for the Jazz, which ended a four-game losing streak to the Celtics. Utah was swept by Boston the last two seasons by an average of 11.8 points and last beat the Celtics on Dec. 19, 2003.

Paul Pierce scored 30 points and reserve Rajon Rondo had 13 points for the Celtics, who are 1-4 for the first time since 1997-98. Point guard Sebastian Telfair left in the first quarter because of shortness of breath and was taken to the hospital.

Seattle 99, Charlotte 85 -- Ray Allen scored 26 points and Rashard Lewis scored 19 of his 21 in the second half on the road for the SuperSonics, spoiling Adam Morrison’s first NBA start.

Lewis, who was 0 for 2 from the field in the first half, scored 11 points in the third quarter, when the SuperSonics outscored the Bobcats, 35-19, to erase a four-point deficit.

Atlanta 111, Toronto 102 -- Joe Johnson scored 34 points and Josh Smith had a personal-best 29 for the visiting Hawks (4-1), who moved three games over .500 for the first time in 7 1/2 years. The Hawks have had seven consecutive losing seasons and never recovered after starting last season 0-9.

Denver 108, Philadelphia 101 -- Carmelo Anthony scored 31 points on the road to lift Denver to its first victory. The Nuggets were the NBA’s only winless team, losing their three games by a combined six points.

J.R. Smith had 16 points and the Nuggets held off a late 76ers rally to jump into the win column. The Nuggets played without Kenyon Martin, out indefinitely after an MRI revealed loose cartilage in his left knee.

Washington 116, Milwaukee 111 -- Gilbert Arenas scored 13 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, and Washington overcame an 11-point deficit in the final period at home.

Arenas also had 11 assists and scored the last six points for the Wizards, who recovered from a miserable third quarter to improve to 3-0 at home.

Houston 103, New York 94 -- Yao Ming scored 35 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and matched a personal high with seven blocks for the Rockets, who beat the Knicks for the fourth straight time.

Tracy McGrady and Rafer Alston scored 13 points apiece for the Rockets, who shot 55% from the field and outrebounded New York, 45-33.

Indiana 93, Orlando 83 -- Al Harrington scored 32 points at Indianapolis, and Jermaine O’Neal had nine points and 11 rebounds after sitting out Wednesday’s game because of a sore left ankle.
