About 231 firefighters on Sunday struggled to battle a wildfire in the Sheep Mountain Wilderness area north of Azusa, authorities said.

The Nowhere fire, named after the nearby Bridge to Nowhere, had burned about 100 acres of thick brush and chaparral but was not threatening any homes, fire officials said.

By nightfall, it was 35% contained as six hand crews -- ferried in by helicopter -- fought the fire.

“The fire’s looking real good now,” said Stanton Florea, fire information officer for the U.S. Forest Service. “There are no structures threatened, and we don’t anticipate that there will be any.”

Spokeswoman Dee Dechert said the fire was in a steep, rocky area, making it difficult for firefighters. Several air tankers and helicopters were used throughout the day to help douse the flames and will be used again today, she said.
