Matchup with Lakers retains its edge

And up next, the Lakers.

The Lakers on Tuesday night play host to the Clippers as the teams renew their recently competitive in-house rivalry at Staples Center.

The Clippers finished ahead of the Lakers in the Pacific Division the last two seasons and the teams have split the season series, and the Clippers advanced further than the Lakers in the Western Conference playoffs last season. The Lakers, however, lead the all-time series, 126-43.

“I haven’t really started to study them too much,” Coach Mike Dunleavy said Sunday after practice. “When I’ve seen them play, I think that they’ve played well. They’ve got some firepower over there. They’ve got some formidable pieces.”

The Clippers spent a lot of time reviewing tape of Saturday’s 103-97 victory in overtime over the Philadelphia 76ers at Staples Center, Dunleavy said.

The Clippers overcame a 16-point, first-quarter deficit to improve to 6-0 on their home court for the first time in franchise history.

Winless in two games away from Staples Center, the Clippers are eager to get their first “road” victory against the Lakers.

“There’s a lot of buzz in the city when we play now,” Dunleavy said. “I think it’s great for the city, and it’s great for basketball.”

Sixth-man Corey Maggette played a key role in the victory over the 76ers.

“When I come in, I try to make something happen,” said Maggette, who had 21 points and eight rebounds. “We needed a boost, we needed some type of a lift, and I’m just glad I can help this team out.”
