Brown’s shot sparks Fullerton

Bobby Brown made a running layup in traffic with four seconds remaining to give Cal State Fullerton a 91-89 overtime victory over host Louisiana Lafayette on Friday night.

The Titans (4-0) outrebounded the Ragin’ Cajuns, 54-38, and held a 25-9 edge in second-chance points while scoring 48 points in the paint.

Scott Cutley led Fullerton with 31 points, and Brown finished with eight. The Titans’ leading rebounder was Justin Burns with 15.

David Dees and Ross Mouton combined for 64 points in the loss. The pair helped the Cajuns (1-3) rally from an 18-point first-half deficit and send the game into overtime.

Dees made a jumper with nine seconds left in overtime that pulled the Cajuns into an 89-89 tie, but Brown’s basket with four seconds clinched the win.

Dees scored a career-high and season-high 37 points on 12-for-24 shooting, and Mouton scored 27 points and was a perfect 11 for 11 from the free-throw line.

Loyola Marymount 88, Pacific 85 -- Brandon Worthy scored 32 points, including four in the second overtime, as the Lions (5-1) beat the Tigers (2-2) in the semifinals of the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage.

Worthy made a runner with 29 seconds left in regulation to tie the score, then made a three-point basket with 2.3 seconds left in the first overtime.

In the first overtime, two free throws by Anthony Brown and one by Steffan Johnson gave Pacific the lead with 21.9 seconds left. Worthy answered with a contested three-point basket from just off the baseline.

In the second overtime, Matthew Knight broke a 78-78 tie with two free throws and Loyola held off the Tigers with a basket by Derick Grubb and six more free throws.

Southeast Missouri State 78, UC Riverside 75 -- The visiting Highlanders (3-4) made two three-point baskets to move to within 75-74 with 15 seconds to play. An intentional foul on the Highlanders’ Charles Jim-George, however, secured the victory for the Redhawks (2-3).

Larry Cunningham led three Riverside players in double figures with 21 points.

Butler 79, Gonzaga 71 -- Butler, despite not making a basket over the final eight minutes at Madison Square Garden, beat Gonzaga in the championship game of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

Butler (6-0) won the battle of the Bulldogs by going 23 for 26 from the free-throw line, including making 16 of 18 over the final 3 1/2 minutes after Gonzaga (5-1) had cut an 18-point deficit to as few as six.
