20-vehicle pileup on Artesia Freeway kills 1
An 18-year-old Gardena man was killed early Saturday on the Artesia Freeway when the van in which he was riding burst into flames after being rear-ended by a pickup, causing a 20-vehicle pileup.
Authorities did not release the name of the man, who burned to death.
The accident occurred about 5:30 a.m. near Beach Boulevard when the eastbound 1985 Chevrolet van slowed or stopped directly ahead of a 2001 Chevrolet pickup traveling in the same direction, authorities said.
Both drivers, one with major injuries, were taken to hospitals, according to the California Highway Patrol.
