Sharks get past the Devils, 2-0

Joe Thornton picked off an errant pass and scored midway through the third period, lifting the San Jose Sharks to a 2-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night at San Jose.

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 24 shots for his third shutout, the 30th of his career, and the Sharks won their season-best fifth in a row at home and eighth of 10 overall.

Mike Grier added a short-handed, empty-net goal in the final seven seconds.

Colorado 4, Vancouver 1 -- Wojtek Wolski had a goal and three assists at Denver, and the Avalanche won for the fourth time in five games.

New York Rangers 2, Pittsburgh 1 -- Martin Straka’s goal with 2.2 seconds left in overtime lifted the Rangers to victory at Pittsburgh. Rookie Evgeni Malkin scored for the Penguins.

Phoenix 2, St. Louis 1 -- Yankic Perreault scored his seventh goal in eight games to lift the Coyotes over the Blues at St. Louis.

Nashville 6, Detroit 2 -- Kimmo Timonen and Marek Zidlicky each scored a power-play goal and the Predators brushed aside the Red Wings at Nashville.

New York Islanders 4, Washington 1 -- Jason Blake scored two goals, Rick DiPietro had 33 saves and the surging Islanders handed the Capitals their sixth consecutive loss at Uniondale, N.Y.

Columbus 5, Minnesota 3 -- Sergei Fedorov had two goals and the Blue Jackets ended an eight-game losing skid and scored their first victory for new Coach Ken Hitchcock at Columbus, Ohio.

Atlanta 1, Florida 0 -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 16th goal and Kari Lehtonen stopped 37 shots to help lift the Thrashers to the win at Atlanta, their second victory in three games.

Boston 3, Toronto 1 -- Petr Tenkrat, Marc Savard and Brad Boyes scored, and the Bruins held on to defeat the sluggish Maple Leafs at Toronto.

Philadelphia 4, Montreal 2 -- Simon Gagne had two goals and an assist at Montreal, and the Flyers scored three second-period goals to end the Canadiens’ three-game winning streak.
