Firefighters battling the Day fire in the Los Padres National Forest were close to containing the blaze Saturday and lifted the last evacuation orders for residents of the area, authorities said.

Peter Frenzen, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service, said the fire was 87% contained Saturday and the number of firefighters was reduced throughout the day from 4,613 to 3,438 due to improving conditions.

The evacuation order for Lockwood Valley was lifted at 6 p.m.

The fire, which started Labor Day, has burned 162,641 acres, including parts of the Angeles National Forest, and has destroyed at least two mobile homes and several barns and sheds.
