Seven police officers, two militants and a civilian were killed in a 26-hour battle between security forces and gunmen holed up in a hotel in the heart of Srinagar, the summer capital of the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir, police said.

At least 12 people were wounded, including eight officers. The standoff began when militants lobbed a grenade at a security camp, then entered a nearby hotel and opened fire on the base.

The Mansurian militant group said a three-member suicide squad attacked the camp.
