Bonds’ Trainer Ordered Released From Prison

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Barry Bonds’ personal trainer Greg Anderson walked out of prison Thursday hours after a federal judge ordered him released because of a “legal snafu.”

U.S. District Judge William Alsup told marshals to free Anderson because a federal appeals court had not affirmed his contempt order within the required 30 days after Anderson was jailed for refusing to testify to a grand jury investigating the Giants slugger.

Anderson, 40, was released with conditions that he cannot travel outside the Northern District of California, that he must surrender his passport and that he must appear at U.S. District Court in San Francisco at noon Oct. 19.

Alsup also ruled Anderson must surrender to the U.S. marshal’s service within 48 hours upon any ruling of Anderson’s appeal by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Anderson could be returned to prison if the appeals court affirms Anderson’s Aug. 28 contempt citation for refusing to answer questions before the panel probing whether Bonds committed perjury when he said he never knowingly used steroids.

Anderson’s latest jail stint lasted 37 days.
