Watney Alone in Front After 71 at Greensboro

Nick Watney shrugged off the showers, played it safe and stayed in position for his first PGA Tour victory Friday.

Watney shot a one-under-par 71 to move to nine-under 135 and remain in the lead during a rainy, blustery second round in the Chrysler Classic at Greensboro, N.C.

Watney shared a two-stroke lead with John Rollins and Brent Geiberger after the first round.

Ryan Palmer (65) and John Senden (70) were a stroke back. Palmer had the day’s best round, which included an eagle and six birdies on the Forest Oaks course.

Tim Petrovic (69), Eric Axley (69), Chris Couch (68), Charley Hoffman (71), Greg Owen (69) and Ryan Moore (70) were two strokes back.

Lorena Ochoa finally gave the hometown fans something to cheer, shooting a course-record nine-under 64 for a three-stroke lead after the second round of the Corona Morelia Championship at Morelia, Mexico.

Ochoa, who leads the LPGA Tour money list with $1,974,122, had an eagle, eight birdies and a bogey on the Tres Marias course to finish at 11-under 135.

She holed a 131-yard second shot on the 353-yard seventh hole.

Sun Young Yoo (67) was second at eight under, Kelli Kuehne (70) was another stroke back, and 19-year-old Julieta Granada (70) and Heather Young (70) followed at six under.

Loren Roberts wasted little time working his way to the top of the leaderboard in his first Champions Tour start in a month, shooting a five-under 67 for a share of the first-round lead in the SAS Championship at Cary, N.C.

Roberts, the tour leader with four victories and $1,945,764 in earnings, had five birdies. Mitch Adcock also opened with a 67, and Tom Jenkins had a 68.

Kevin Na extended his lead in the Nationwide Tour’s Mark Christopher Charity Classic after shooting a five-under 66 at Empire Lakes Golf Course in Rancho Cucamonga.

Na’s two-round total of 14-under 128 leads Chris Tidland and Dan Buchner (65) by six shots and equals the largest 36-hole lead in tour history.

Bradley Dredge chipped for birdies on his first two holes and finished with a four-under 67 at Carnoustie to take a three-stroke lead after the second round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.

Dredge, who had a course-record 64 on the Old Course at St. Andrews on Thursday, is at 13-under 131. Charl Schwartzel, Johan Edfors and Simon Dyson were tied for second. Schwartzel had a 67, and Edfors shot a 70, both at St. Andrews. Dyson had a 68 at Kingsbarns.
