California: Spicing it up in Lone Pine

Share

“A recent excursion along the Eastern Sierra brought me to a most unlikely spot for the best Mexican food in California, bar none. The Bonanza Mexican Restaurant is a little gem on Main Street in Lone Pine -- a town on the way to Mammoth. We had dinner there, and breakfast the next morning. I chose the chile verde. The slow-roasted pork almost fell apart on the fork, and the sauce and homemade flour tortillas were sublime. Everything here is homemade, including the salsa and chips.”

Entrees from $10.50.

Canada: Grandeur of an era gone by

“WE started our Quebec Province trip in Montreal at the Hotel Le St. James. What a fortuitous beginning for our 50th anniversary. The hotel was a bank converted into a 61-room boutique hotel with antiques on every elevator landing and a dining room that could have been a set for a Belle Epoque event.”

Double rooms from $400.
