Turner Draws a Crowd

USC receiver Patrick Turner drew the most attention from a gaggle of young autograph seekers after Wednesday’s practice, a surprise to the rangy sophomore.

“I think it’s just the number,” said Turner, who wears No. 1. “For little kids, that’s what it feels like. They go to it. Like Barney.”

Turner definitely got the attention of future opponents with his performance last week against Washington.

The 6-foot-5 Tennessee native had a career-best 12 receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown to help the Trojans improve to 5-0.

Turner knew before the game that his role would expand from the previous week, when he started in place of injured All-American Dwayne Jarrett and caught five passes. Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin said it was only a matter of time before Turner made his presence felt.

“We knew it was there; now he knows whenever we need him to be the guy he can be the guy,” Kiffin said.

Turner’s production probably will be reduced Saturday against Arizona State if Jarrett and flanker Steve Smith are available as expected.

Jarrett, who played briefly against Washington, has practiced all week but has been held out of scrimmage drills.

“I’ve taken him out a few times because I don’t want to put too much on him, and he’s mad about it,” Kiffin said.

Smith, who caught 11 passes against Washington State, injured his ankle in the second half against Washington. He has not practiced but said results of an MRI exam on his left foot revealed no fractures and that he would play Saturday.

“It’s still sore in one spot but I’m hoping I can just get over that,” Smith said.

Chris McFoy will not play against Arizona State because of fractured bones in his shoulder area, a particularly frustrating situation for the versatile receiver.

McFoy had been looking forward to facing the Sun Devils ever since his brother signed a letter of intent with Arizona State in February.

Ryan McFoy, a safety, returned an interception for a touchdown in his second game. Chris, a fifth-year senior, caught his first career touchdown pass on Sept. 30 against Washington State and was injured on his next reception.

“We already shared words,” Chris said. “First of all, he says I’m not really hurt, that I’m just being a punk so I don’t have to face him.

“Younger brothers always talk.”

McFoy said he hoped to return to practice in time to play Oregon State on Oct. 28.

Offensive lineman Chilo Rachal (ankle) is on track to play against Arizona State, but his status as a starter will be determined by how he practices today, Coach Pete Carroll said.... With linebackers Dallas Sartz and Oscar Lua nursing leg bruises, Clay Matthews and Thomas Williams have taken more repetitions this week.... Running back Desmond Reed was absent again because of an academic assignment, Carroll said.
