Bob Tway and Steve Flesch had eight-under-par rounds Thursday to share the first-round lead in the Frys.com Open.

Tway, the 1990 winner, shot a 63 on the 7,019-yard TPC Canyons course that plays to a par of 71, and Flesch had a 64 on the 7,243-yard, par-72 TPC Summerlin.

The players alternate between the two courses for the first two days of the tournament, with the final two rounds played at Summerlin.

On a warm, still and sunny day, scores were low and the field was bunched near the top.

Four players -- Bubba Dickerson, Rich Beem, Will MacKenzie and Patrick Sheehan -- were tied at seven under, a shot back of the leaders. Eight players, including Duffy Waldorf and Joe Ogilvie, were in a group at six under.

Three-time Las Vegas winner Jim Furyk was three under after a 68 at TPC Canyons.

Defending champion Wes Short Jr., who beat Furyk on the second playoff hole last year for his only PGA Tour victory, opened with a 68 at TPC Summerlin.

The 47-year-old Tway began his round on the 10th hole at Summerlin and took a while to get it going.

“I was just plugging along, and I made a nice birdie on the 18th hole, holing a 25-footer,” he said. “From there, I started making a lot of putts, which I haven’t been doing much this year.”

Flesch jump-started his round when he rolled in a 35-foot eagle putt on No. 3.

He said he was simply continuing his good play of recent weeks, when he tied for 12th in the Texas Open and tied for third at Greensboro.

“I’m just kind of riding the wave of momentum,” said the 39-year-old Flesch.

Among those back in the pack after the first round were Fred Couples, who shot an opening 67 that left him tied for 32nd at four under, and John Daly with a two-under 69. David Duval was two over with a 74.
