Football season is in full swing. Time to break into the wings, and we’re not just talking Buffalo.

The wings “Marrakesh,” chicken wings dredged in flour seasoned with cinnamon, coriander, cumin, cloves, ginger, rose petals and more, are among the most popular dishes at this groovy small-plates lounge. Before the kitchen sends ‘em out, they get brushed in a sticky, sweet pomegranate-orange glaze. The wings also make an appearance at the new weeknight happy hour, when they are served in a slightly smaller portion.

Wingnuts

As the name suggests, wings are the thing at this 3-month-old spot done up in an aviation theme. They come in 30 flavors, including some for showoff types, such as the Buffalo Ouch! or Double Dog Dare. With those, you’ll probably want a cold beer. Fortunately, there are about two dozen on tap.

Furaibo

When Furaibo opened in Southern California nearly 20 years ago, its focus was chicken wings. The menu has since expanded, but chicken wings continue to be the star of the show at this izakaya-style spot, with additional locations in West L.A. and Puente Hills. And for good reason. They’re crispy and come in a secret sauce that is both tart and sweet,

with a dusting of salt and white pepper.

Pam’s Place

Chef-owner Sompit “Pam” Klingliang serves wings two ways at her cozy, family-style place with the pretty patio out back. As at many Thai places around town, she does them stuffed with a mixture of ground pork, glass noodles and vegetables, then fried. She also does a Thai take on the classic deep-fried Buffalo wings in a garlic, chile and red wine sauce.

Kokomo Cafe

This full-service but tres casual outdoor eatery at the Farmers Market does a brisk business in wings. Its classic Buffalo-style wings, which fall about midway on the spice continuum, are served with the usual accompaniments: carrot and celery sticks, and blue cheese dressing.
