Different readings of letter to Latinos

Re “Nguyen defends letter to Latinos,” Oct. 23

What is wrong with telling the truth? We all know that illegal immigrants cannot vote. Green card holders cannot vote. Once you are sworn in as a U.S. citizen, you are no longer an immigrant but a full-fledged American.

So what did Tan Nguyen do wrong? He told the Latino people the truth: that if they vote and are not citizens, they’ll be in violation of federal laws. Nguyen should be lauded instead of being persecuted for informing the ill-informed about the truth.

Did Nguyen’s campaign mail a letter in the Vietnamese language to every voter with a Vietnamese surname telling them it is illegal for an “immigrant” to vote in a U.S. election? If the answer is no, it becomes clear that the letter mailed to registered voters with Latino surnames was an obvious attempt to discourage them from voting. That’s illegal.

Nguyen probably didn’t have the money for uniformed officers at polling precincts, so a mailer was the next best thing. Perhaps somebody from the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth will take pity on him and invite him to join.
