KEYS TO THE GAME

Share

1Be in a rush. USC spent two weeks exploring ways to improve a pass rush that has produced only nine sacks and has failed to pressure quarterbacks with any regularity. Sophomore end Kyle Moore is among those who might have an increased role. Oregon State has given up 17 sacks, but the Beavers rank third nationally in getting them, averaging 3.7 a game. USC’s offensive line has done a good job of protecting John David Booty, giving up only eight sacks.

2Stay grounded. Trojans tailback Chauncey Washington is healthy and intent on keeping his spot atop the depth chart. The junior carried the ball 57 times for 259 yards and two touchdowns in the last three games. Oregon State’s Yvenson Bernard injured his ankle last week against Arizona, but USC expects that he will play. If he doesn’t, junior college transfer Clinton Polk would start.

3Pass it on. After struggling in the second half of each of the last two games, Booty needs a confidence boost. He could get that, and possibly more, with receivers Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith at or near full strength at the same time for the first time in weeks. Oregon State’s Matt Moore has not produced a huge yardage game this season, but he has cut down on mistakes and could hurt the Trojans if he is allowed to stay in the pocket without pressure.
