A legend’s lessons

Share

YOUR article on Bruce Lee brought so many memories back to me [“What’s in a Name? Cash,” Aug. 27]. When I was a 10-year-old boy living in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, Master Jhoon Rhee brought Bruce Lee to our martial arts school.

The Legend himself, with his deep philosophy, trained us for a few weeks with his self-made style of Jeet Kune Do (Way of the Intercepting Fist). He kept pushing and reminding us that each fall we took on the mat or strike on the chest was another step to the top, and the only way to make it there was by failing first without ever giving up. His way of teaching, his tough but fluid approach to martial arts and to life was the epitome of perfection.

Lee fought for the underdog. I hope that his wife and daughter will keep what he stood for intact while spreading his good will and charisma around the world.
