Ortiz, Gabbard Are Boston’s Bright Spots

David Ortiz returned to the Red Sox’s lineup on Tuesday night and watched Kason Gabbard earn his first major league victory with seven innings of three-hit ball that helped Boston beat the Chicago White Sox, 1-0.

Ortiz had not played in eight days and was hospitalized for two days last week because of heart palpitations. He went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and a walk.

Gabbard (1-3) gave up two walks and struck out six. Mike Timlin pitched two innings for his fourth save, his second since closer Jonathan Papelbon went out because of a tired right shoulder.

Javier Vazquez (11-9) pitched a three-hitter, struck out 11 and retired his last 13 batters in his first complete game since July 6, 2005. He is winless in five starts.

Boston scored when Trot Nixon, who returned from a month on the disabled list on Monday, doubled with one out in the fourth and came home on Coco Crisp’s single.

Gabbard was perfect through three innings and then got help from his defense, with three double plays.
