Texas starting cornerback Tarell Brown and backup linebacker and special-teams player Tyrell Gatewood were suspended for Saturday’s game against No. 1 Ohio State after their arrests on misdemeanor charges.

The loss of Brown, a senior and Texas’ top cover cornerback, is a big blow to a defense counting on him to match up with the Buckeyes’ top receiver, Ted Ginn Jr. Gatewood made one tackle on special teams in the No. 2 Longhorns’ opener.

The players were arrested early Monday, along with former Longhorns linebacker Aaron Harris, when their car was pulled over by Travis County sheriff’s deputies.

Brown was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon after he was found with a loaded 9-millimeter handgun on his lap, according to deputies. Brown, Gatewood and Harris all were charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana less than two ounces.

Texas Coach Mack Brown would not say Tuesday whether the suspensions were only for the Ohio State game.
