at Tampa Bay 4, Minnesota 2: Greg Norton and Ty Wigginton hit consecutive home runs in the seventh inning, helping the Devil Rays end a 14-game losing streak against the Twins that extended to June 3, 2004. Minnesota’s wild-card lead over Chicago was reduced to half a game. Twins starter Carlos Silva gave up one hit, one walk and had two strikeouts over six scoreless innings before leaving with an upset stomach.
Chicago 8, at Boston 1: Jose Contreras (12-7) pitched eight strong innings and Jim Thome went four for four with his 39th home run in a revamped White Sox lineup. Manager Ozzie Guillen dropped Scott Podsednik from the top of the order to eighth and gave Ryan Sweeney his first career start at leadoff.
Seattle 5, at Detroit 4: Kenji Johjima’s RBI single in the 10th put the Mariners ahead and J.J. Putz got three outs for his 31st save, sending the Tigers to their 19th loss in 28 games.
at Oakland 9, Texas 6: Mark Kotsay hit a three-run double in a six-run sixth inning to help the Athletics overcome a 4-0 deficit and avoid a three-game sweep.
at Toronto 3, Cleveland 2: Ted Lilly (12-12) matched his career high in victories and Russ Adams drove in two runs.
