Putting faith in ‘Doubt’

In “Doubt” -- John Patrick Shanley’s provocative Pulitzer Prize-winning drama -- Cherry Jones returns in her critically acclaimed Broadway role as a nun at a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, consumed by her belief that a popular young priest is guilty of child abuse. Is Sister Aloysius right to hound charismatic Father Flynn about his relationship with an altar boy, or is the rigid nun’s blind faith in her own moral certainty about to destroy an innocent man? This tricky, ambiguous play came away the big winner at the 2005 Tony Awards, earning a leading actress nod for Jones and a directing honor for Doug Hughes, who will stage this Center Theatre Group production. Adriane Lenox will reprise her Tony-winning role as the mother of the boy in question.
