San Francisco starter Jamey Wright and Colorado reliever Jose Mesa were each suspended Friday for three games for intentionally throwing at an opposing hitter during Tuesday night’s game at Denver.

Giants Manager Felipe Alou was suspended for a game because a warning had been issued to both teams prior to Wright’s hitting Matt Holliday in the eighth inning of the Rockies’ 12-4 victory.

Wright and Alou were to begin serving their suspensions during Friday night’s game at Milwaukee. Mesa, who hit San Francisco’s Mark Sweeney in the top of the eighth inning, has filed an appeal.

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Roy Halladay will sit out the rest of the season because of a strained right forearm.

Halladay said the forearm has bothered him off and on all season. He skipped a start in April and left his last start against New York in the fourth inning.

“I realized this was the best and smartest thing to do,” said Halladay, who had two scheduled starts left.

The 2003 American League Cy Young Award winner was 16-5 with a 3.19 earned-run average.

“We just spoke to Dr. Joyce, who’s been in touch with the physician at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale (Ariz.), and the surgery went very well,” said Dayton Moore, the Royals’ general manager.
