As Oak Tree Opens, Cambiocorsa Aims to Stay Perfect at Santa Anita

Cambiocorsa returns to the place where she has been unbeatable as the gray daughter of Avenue Of Flags heads a large field in the $100,000 Sen. Ken Maddy Handicap today at Santa Anita.

A Grade III at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf, the Maddy drew 14 entrants and is the opening day feature of the 26-day Oak Tree season.

Owned by Leatherman Racing LLC and Ran Jan Racing, Cambiocorsa has won all seven of her starts on the hillside course in Arcadia with five of the victories coming during Santa Anita’s winter spring meet earlier this year.

Trained by Doug O’Neill, the California bred will have regular rider Jon Court aboard as she makes her first start since finishing fifth in the CashCall Mile on July 1 at Hollywood Park.

Race of the day: Peg’s Prayer is back in with New York breds as she tries for her third win of the year in the $65,000 Irish Actress today at Belmont Park. Kent Desormeaux will ride the late running daughter of Rodeo for owner-breeders Mike and Lynn Shanley and trainer David Donk in the 1 1/16 -mile turf affair for 3-year-old fillies.

One for the road: Ramos Fizz goes first off the claim for sharp trainer Lloyd Mason and can win for the second time in a row in the seventh race today at Golden Gate Fields. Apprentice Luis Martinez will ride the 2-year-old Richly Blended gelding for owners Edward and Theresa DeNike in the $20,000 starter allowance at six furlongs. Ramos Fizz was claimed for $32,000 out of a four-length win on Aug. 27 and the runner-up (Groupofthefuture) was a next-out winner.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Soul City Slew, Si Chimi and Political Maneuver in the fifth, Mon’s The Man and Their He Goes in the sixth and Capecloakanddagger and Rockin’ Rizzi in the seventh.
