Injury bug bites Marchant again

Times Staff Writer

Todd Marchant’s injury-plagued season took another wrong turn Tuesday when the veteran forward learned that he would be sidelined indefinitely because of a groin tear.

Marchant, who has sat out 23 games this season, has struggled with injuries since aggravating a stomach muscle that forced him to sit out six games from Dec. 26 to Jan. 7. But last week he returned to the lineup.

“I can’t say there was one incident where I did it,” said Marchant, who has eight goals and 23 points. “On Sunday when we got home, I knew something just wasn’t right. I could feel it.”

With Marchant now listed as week to week, the team recalled center Mark Hartigan from the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League and reassigned center Tim Brent to Portland.

Coach Randy Carlyle was noncommittal on whether Hartigan, who played in three games for the Ducks this season, will take Marchant’s spot.

Even though the Ducks have secured a playoff berth, they still have plenty to play for, starting against San Jose tonight.

With Dallas and the Sharks lurking, the Ducks need three more points to clinch their first Pacific Division championship.

And with 106 points, the Ducks are still within reach of earning the Western Conference’s No. 1 seeding.

“I don’t remember ... not having to battle all the way to the end,” goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere said.
