Man who was run over by pickup gets $600,000
A sunbathing pre-med student run over by a county lifeguard’s pickup will receive a $600,000 settlement from Los Angeles County, supervisors decided Tuesday.
Not seeing him in the sand on a Santa Monica beach, a lifeguard drove slowly over the chest and shoulder of Jesse Pace, then 19 and a junior at Lee University in Tennessee, in June 2005.
Pace had to have his ruptured spleen removed and sustained injuries to his upper body.
County policy requires that drivers on the beach look around the vehicle before proceeding, according to a county memo.
“In light of the policy, it will be difficult to justify the lifeguard’s conduct,” the report read.
