Simi Valley police continued their search Wednesday for a man in a pickup truck who approached two girls on their way to church, saying he wanted to rape them.
The girls -- ages 10 and 12 -- were walking to Sonrise Christian Fellowship church in the 2300 block of Shasta Way about 7 p.m. Tuesday when the incident occurred.
The man was described as a 25- to 30-year-old Latino with a thin build and mustache, wearing his hair in a ponytail. He was driving a large, late-model silver truck and was parked in a driveway near the church.
According to police, the girls said the man told them, “Come here. I have something for you.” He then told them, “Come here so I can rape you,” police said.
The girls ran about 100 yards to the church. The man followed along until he saw the girls enter an occupied building, then turned around and drove off in the opposite direction, said Sgt. Jeff Dominick.
The Rev. Stan Wilson, senior pastor at Sonrise, said that church staff was told to be on the lookout for any suspicious person or activity in the neighborhood.
“This is not typically the type of thing that would happen here,” he said.
Last month, a 9-year-old Simi Valley girl was abducted by a middle-aged man in a pickup who attempted to sexually assault her, police said. The man eventually dropped off the girl, who was not seriously injured, near her family’s apartment.
No arrest has been made in that case. But police said there appears to be no connection between the two incidents.
