Northrop Grumman Corp. won an Air Force contract worth as much as $2.34 billion to modify a polar-orbiting satellite system.

The award to improve the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System calls for two development satellites with an option for another pair. The work is expected to be completed by September 2016, the Pentagon said.

Century City-based Northrop is the prime contractor for the next generation of low-Earth-orbiting environmental, climate and weather-monitoring satellites. The system is run jointly by the Air Force, the Commerce Department and NASA.
